Sitges, much more than a beach
Sitges is one of the favourite escapes for locals in Barcelona. Just over half an hour from the city via the C-32, it offers urban beaches, a historic seafront centre, a remarkable food scene and a surprisingly busy cultural calendar for its size: the Fantastic Film Festival, music festivals, markets and lively local fiestas. The seafront promenade between La Punta and the church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla is one of the most recognisable postcards on the Catalan coast.
How to get there from Barcelona by taxi
The Barcelona-Sitges trip is usually taken via the tolled C-32, around 40 minutes traffic-free from the Eixample and about 50 from the north of the city. The alternative via the old N-340 along the Garraf cliffs is longer but offers a spectacular landscape of cliffs and curves above the sea, ideal for photography and unhurried visitors. The driver can suggest the most appropriate route depending on time and traffic.
Closed fare or hourly hire
For a simple Barcelona-Sitges transfer or return, the closed fare is the most predictable option. For a day out, the hourly hire works better: the driver stays in Sitges or returns at the agreed time, so long walks become possible without watching the clock. For couples and small groups, a four-seater taxi usually suffices; for larger groups, the minivan is the right choice.
What to do in a morning or afternoon
The classic plan starts with a stroll along the Passeig Marítim and Platja de la Ribera, continues with the climb to the parish church, with the best views, and then drops into the old town with its white alleys, indianos houses and the façade of Cau Ferrat, linked to Santiago Rusiñol. Lunch at a terrace restaurant facing the Mediterranean and a coffee afterwards in a square complete an excellent half day. With more time, the Garraf beaches or coves south of Sitges deserve a visit.
Film festival and events
The Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival draws a large audience every October. To attend from Barcelona, a booked taxi avoids parking issues, traffic restrictions on certain days, and screening-schedule coordination. Sitges Pride in June, the Carnival in February, summer concerts and local fiestas drive high taxi demand: booking days or weeks ahead is strongly advised.
Eating in Sitges
The food scene ranges from rice dishes and seafood by the port to contemporary cuisine in the old town. Maricel, Vivero, El Cable or Las Vegas Bar are classic references, but Sitges constantly refreshes its offer. Enjoying an aperitif at Plaça de l’Església with the church in the background is a very local experience worth keeping in mind. The taxi makes it easy to enjoy wine or cava without worrying about the return.
Heading back to Barcelona
The return is usually smooth except on Sunday evenings, when the C-32 can clog up. Booking the taxi an hour earlier than expected gives a buffer against any hiccup. If you head straight to El Prat Airport, mention it when booking: there are shorter routes than going through the city centre and the driver will optimise the journey.
Final tips
Wear comfortable shoes for the cobblestones, bring sun cream if you plan to swim and, if you visit the church, a top to cover your shoulders. For couples planning dinner in Sitges and a late return, a booked taxi with confirmed return is the most relaxed option. And if your plan includes Penedès wineries, a stop between Barcelona and Sitges adds a wine element without lengthening the day too much.
